What is it?

Rosemary is a bushy herb with thin leaves that look like needles. It smells strong, a bit like a pine forest. Bees love its little blue flowers.

Rosemary grows wild on dry, sunny hills near the sea, in Morocco too. Cooks put it on potatoes, chicken and bread.

How people use it

In the kitchen

  • On roast potatoes, chicken, lamb and bread.
  • In olive oil to give it a nice smell.

Traditional uses

🔵 Grandma's wisdom — not proven by science

  • Tea after meals to help digestion.

On skin & body

  • In bath products and hair rinses.

Home & garden

  • A great plant for bees in a sunny garden.

Fun facts

  1. Its old Latin name means “dew of the sea”, because it grows near the sea.

  2. In 2017, scientists moved rosemary into the sage family group. Its new name is Salvia rosmarinus.

  3. Bees love rosemary flowers, even in winter.

Grow it yourself

  • Easy
  • Lots of sun
  • A little water
  • Grows in a pot
  • A few weeks after planting a young plant
  1. Get a small rosemary plant, or ask a grown-up for a cutting.
  2. Plant it in a pot with sandy soil in the sunniest spot.
